BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut — The Connecticut Huskies absolutely dominated the Oregon Ducks today en route to their 10th straight final four. UConn jumped out to a 23-4 lead and never looked back, eventually winning the game by 38 points, 90-52. The Ducks shot the ball surprisingly well (42.3% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc,) but were done in by 17 first half turnovers and were rarely able to slow down the Huskies offensive attack. Sabrina Ionescu finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists (but with an ugly 1-2 assist-to-turnover ratio,) and Ruthy Hebard scored 12 points, but they were the only Ducks in double figures. Napheesa Collier led UConn with 28 points and 12 rebounds on 60% shooting, and she was aided by Gabby Williams’ 25 point effort. The magical run ended here. UConn was the far superior team in the contest, and Oregon wasn’t able to force the Huskies out of their gameplan. Seniors Jacinta Vandenberg and Mar’shay Moore subbed into the game late in the fourth quarter to clos

That “one shining moment” is getting closer for Ducks It is the year 2017 and the Oregon Ducks are heading to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. Sorry, I just had to remind myself again. UO’s last trip was 78 years ago during the magical championship season of 1939, as part of the first-ever NCAA Tournament. The 77 years was the longest drought between appearances in college basketball history. Oregon’s 33 wins in 2016-17 are the MOST in program history. Nevertheless, the players want more. That ‘39 Championship banner is getting lonely at Matthew Knight Arena. “We never been there, but we’re not done yet,” said Tyler Dorsey. “We want to put the banner up. There is only one banner at Oregon. They sleep on the west coast. We’re competitors. We love this game.” Over 24 hours removed from Oregon’s dismantling of No. 1 Kansas, most are still in disbelief. EUGENE, Oregon— This one was over before it even started. Washington first baseman Willie MacIver hit a grand slam in the top of the first and it was all down hill from there for Oregon, as the Huskies romped to a 12-3 victory Sunday at PK Park. Spot starter freshman lefty Zack Noll (1-1) got rocked early, giving up six runs on two hits and four walks while striking out three in just two-plus innings. He also provided the rye bread and mustard for MacIver’s Grand Salami (with apologies to the late, great Dave Niehaus): The bullpen for Oregon (15-6, 4-2) didn’t fare much better, as sophomore lefty Cole Stringer relieved Noll in the third and promptly gave up two more runs on three hits in his inning of work, freshman righty James Acuna gave up another run on two hits in his inning-and-a-third, and the rout was on. All told, the Ducks used seven pitchers before the night was through. The Ducks’ offense had no answers Sunday, as Huskies’ starter Joe DeMers (3-1) kept them from mounting a rally.

Kansas guard Frank Mason and his teammates kept thinking the Jayhawks were going to mount a comeback against Oregon in the Ducks’ 74-60 Elite Eight win. Kansas has turned its past two NCAA tournament games from close contests to routs in a matter of seconds with second-half blizzards. Saturday’s games marked the first which featured a truly brighter spotlight for the teams playing. The Elite Eight, unlike the three rounds prior, only has one game played and televised at each interval. Here are five big things we saw.1.) Gonzaga shouldn’t be satisfied with reaching the Final FourFor the first time in program history, Gonzaga is headed to the Final Four after beating 11-seed Xavier in the West Region final. For a school of Gonzaga’s size, with no football program and situated in the West Coast Conference, it is a huge achievement. Of course, the Ducks would rise to the occasion. While everyone knew the No. 3-seeded Oregon Ducks were a terrific team, the No. 1-seeded Kansas Jayhawks entered Saturday night’s Elite Eight contest as the clear favorite after they absolutely annihilated Purdue 98-66 in the Sweet 16. Most experts even considered Kansas to be the best team remaining in the tournament. And then factor in that Saturday night’s game was in Kansas City, making it basically a home game for the Jayhawks.Well, clearly none of that mattered to Oregon. The Ducks went into the Sprint Center and put together a brilliant effort to stomp the Jayhawks 74-60, and are now going to the Final Four for the first time since 1939. Oregon got the big nights they needed from their best players, with Tyler Dorsey, Dillon Brooks, and Jordan Bell filling up the box score and making huge plays on both sides of the ball.Dorsey, a sophomore guard, went off for 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. Oregon’s basketball program had one of its finest moments in their history on Saturday, and Phil Knight was on hand to celebrate. They took a hit in their seeding after Chris Boucher suffered a torn ACL in the Pac-12 Tournament, but they’ve proven they can win without him.Oregon doesn’t have much of a tradition in college hoops. Their only previous trip to the Final Four was in 1939, when they won it all. Under Dana Altman, they’ve made the tournament five times and have back-to-back strong showings. They sure are making Knight proud.
