GAME 3: OREGON STATE VS. CAL POLY
09/05/2019   Yardbarker Oregon Ducks
Following a mostly bland opening weekend, college football Week 2 ups the ante with quite a few significant matchups we’re eager to watch unfold. The big one everyone is focused on is LSU vs. Texas in Austin Saturday night — a game that’s already led to some interesting bulletin-board material. That’s just one of eight matchups that have piqued our interest as particularly compelling. Army vs. Michigan It’s hard to really have a handle on how good Michigan’s new-look offense can be in 2019. Middle Tennessee didn’t offer up much resistance in Week 1. And while the Wolverines did show some sparks, it wasn’t the most impressive performance we’ve ever seen. Army should test Shea Patterson and Co. a bit more, and the Black Knights of course will pound the ground relentlessly on offense. This means Patterson will have to make the most of what may be limited opportunities to put points on the board. Nebraska vs. Colorado To say that Nebraska’s opener against South Alabama was a wake-up call is understating it just

People were tuned to their television sets and other devices as Oregon and Auburn opened up their season Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. The game itself came down to the wire before Auburn pulled away late for a potential season-defining win for embattled head coach Gus Malzahn and Co. Apparently, the college football world was all about what took place on the field in Texas. According to Show Buzz Daily, this game drew north of 6.8 million viewers, the most-watched matchup of opening weekend. It really wasn’t even that close. Oregon-Auburn: 6.86 million Houston-Oklahoma: 5.44 million Duke-Alabama: 4.64 million Florida-Atlantic-Ohio State: 2.62 million Northwestern-Stanford: 2.02 million College football on Saturday night is always a draw. It’s why the national networks schedule the biggest games of the weekend in that slot. Though, it must be noted that these results did not take into account Notre Dame’s win over Louisville on Labor Day. Ratings for that game have yet to be released.

There are some downright gargantuan games on the college football Week 2 schedule, and plenty more to talk about outside of those games. With the NFL coming back on Thursday night, almost all of the Week 2 games are being crammed into Saturday. It’s going to be glorious, and the best any of us can hope for is that the football gods grant us the gift of utter chaos. These are the top storylines we’ll be focused on as the college football action takes place in Week 2. Chance to pile up stats for top Heisman contenders A few of the top Heisman contenders that wowed in Week 1 have a chance to rack up some impressive stat lines against cupcakes in Week 2. Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor has a date with Central Michigan. Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa will go against New Mexico State (and the spread for this game is patently absurd). Jalen Hurts and the Sooners are hosting South Dakota (but don’t tell him it’s going to be easy). All three of these young men should have huge games this weekend, bolstering their case as true

Dallas was teeming with Oregon Ducks fans Saturday afternoon; a veritable sea of green and yellow. The vibe was enthusiastic and spirited, colored with streaks of hope. No problems, no worries – “Hakuna Matata,” especially with Justin Herbert back under center. This was the year – the year the Pac-12 solved its playoff problem starting with a big win over a storied SEC school. Yeah, that would do it. Fast forward four hours to Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal sitting in the postgame press conference, fielding questions about botched handoffs and burned timeouts – trying to explain Oregon’s 27-21 loss to Auburn in his patented matter-of-fact manner. “Certainly like to have a few things back,” said Cristobal in his opening remarks. “And a tough one, a real tough one. Real tough moments in that locker room right now.” The reality is that Oregon played Auburn tough, and for most of the game the Ducks were the better team. However, the media, particularly of the social variety, wants to paint this loss as the be

The 2019 college football season will be filled with many storylines — plenty of which will involve the great quarterbacks from all over the country. Is Clemson's Trevor Lawrence really this good? Will Tua Tagovailoa return Alabama to a championship game? Can Justin Herbert get Oregon back among the elite programs in the nation? There is one quarterback who tends to be forgotten, and he already may have had more of an impact on this season than anyone else. He not only may have put his team in the mix for a national championship, but by his mere existence he has created a ripple effect throughout college football that has helped set lofty goals for other programs. That quarterback? Georgia's Jake Fromm. Fromm is seemingly nondescript. He just goes out and does a solid job. He's not looked at as an NFL savior nor is he just some guy tagging along because he's all the Bulldogs have. He has nearly won one national championship and has the Dawgs in line to challenge for one this year. In his short career, he's w

The Auburn Tigers scored 21 unanswered points to rally back to a 27-21 win over the Oregon Ducks on Saturday, and they were definitely going to rub it in afterward. The Tigers trailed 21-6 midway through the third quarter before their furious rally, which culminated in quarterback Bo Nix finding wide receiver Seth Williams with seven seconds left for a 26-yard go-ahead touchdown. That opened the door for Auburn running back JaTarvious Whitlow to get a little bit of trash talk in. No. 11 Oregon was actually ranked ahead of Auburn coming into the game, but you wouldn’t know it from this quote. That said, Oregon isn’t going to earn any respect this way. The Ducks blew several opportunities to kill the game off, and it’s not the first time something like this has happened. They have no one to blame but themselves, and they’re just going to have to take quotes like this.

Oregon Ducks fans are getting used to the same old story with their football team. The Ducks blew a game-long lead and lost 27-21 to Auburn at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday night. The Ducks scored on their opening drive and led every second of the game thereafter until Auburn’s Bo Nix threw a winning touchdown pass to Seth Williams with nine seconds left. Seeing their team lose a game they led the entire way has to be frustrating, and Ducks fans are likely walking away feeling like there were so many missed opportunities to put the game away. Oregon was leading 7-0 in the first quarter and drove to the Auburn 2. They were looking to take a 14-0 lead but Bryan Addison dropped an easy touchdown on third down. As if that weren’t bad enough, kicker Camden Lewis missed a 20-yard field goal on the following down. Oregon still carried a 14-6 lead into halftime and increased the margin to 21-6 in the third quarter. They punted on their next two possessions, and that’s where things got really bad.

After a long offseason, we surely hope it did. Certainly, upcoming weekends will provide more drama and intrigue, but there was enough on the plate Saturday to quench even the most intense thirst for college football. Early on, Georgia transfer Justin Fields made his presence felt almost immediately as Ohio State overpowered FAU. A bit later on, Florida State proved last year was no fluke with a brutal loss to Boise State. In the evening, the Oregon Ducks and Auburn Tigers made us wait until the bitter end to see who would win the first ranked-versus-ranked matchup of the 2019 college football season. With just over six minutes remaining in Saturday night’s game between Oregon and Auburn, senior quarterback Justin Herbert went down with a knee injury. Herbert had just delivered a pass when linebacker Owen Pappoe hit him, and their knees collided. The quarterback stayed on the ground for a couple of minutes and was attended to by a trainer before finally coming off the field under his own power. Thankfully, he appeared to be OK and quickly returned to the game. However, the Oregon bench was certainly experiencing a bit of panic initially as the Heisman candidate lay on the turf holding his knee.

It’s not often that you see punters making big hits, so when they do it’s noteworthy. Unfortunately for the Oregon Ducks, punter Blake Maimone took things too far in the second quarter against Auburn. Maimone was pretty much the last line of defense as Christian Tutt took off down the left sideline. The punter did a fantastic job of stopping him in his tracks, but then he body slammed him out of bounds, drawing a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. Whoopsies. This penalty ended up not costing Oregon anything. The Auburn offense got within field goal range just before halftime, but kicker Anders Carlson shanked a 42-yard attempt.

At a moment when the Oregon Ducks held all the momentum and were poised to take a three-score lead, Auburn Tigers defensive lineman Big Kat Bryant made a big play that might change everything. Oregon moved inside Auburn’s 10-yard line after a monster punt return put the Ducks in position to take a 21-3 lead. Instead, quarterback Justin Herbert fumbled the football, and Bryant came to the rescue with an 85-yard return. @AuburnFootball's Big Kat Bryant returned a fumble recovery 85 yards, falling just short of the goal line. pic.twitter.com/5mveEEIBZS— SportsCenter (@SportsCen ter) September 1, 2019 Bryant, who seems to have a tendency to make big plays, nearly got a defensive touchdown on this one. Fortunately for the Ducks, wide receiver Bryan Addison turned on the jets and made it downfield to tackle Bryant just short of the end zone. Addison’s huge play proved to be a pivotal moment as Auburn ultimately settled for a field goal. One moment with two potentially game-changing plays could easily determine the

Freshman quarterback Bo Nix is an electric young player, but his inexperience bit Auburn bad in the second quarter Saturday against Oregon. Two plays after Nix threw a gorgeous 28-yard strike to Harold Joiner, he committed a cardinal sin, throwing across his body scrambling to the left sideline. The end result was an atrocious red-zone interception, hauled in by Oregon’s Thomas Graham Jr. Nix cannot make that throw. The fact he did it in the red zone hurts all the more. Instead of attempting a field goal at the least, the Tigers gave the ball back to an Oregon offense that’s been practically unstoppable so far in this game.

The Oregon Ducks spent months preparing for a top-25 matchup against the Auburn Tigers on national television. It appears all that time to prepare clearly wasn’t enough for their offense. Quarterback Justin Herbert took the field for the first offensive series before the game. Unfortunately for Oregon, its offense seemed unprepared for the moment as the seconds ticked away and the Ducks were forced to call a timeout to avoid a delay of game. The early blunder on offense even had people already questioning if they made the right pick. https://t.co/uUMisxcSXE— Eric Robinson (@_Eric_Robinson) August 31, 2019 That probably isn’t how Oregon drew up their season starting. Now the fan base just has to hope it isn’t an omen of what’s coming this season.

Some college football teams enter the season expecting to make the College Football Playoff. Clemson and Alabama expect to be there, and if they’re not, something went horribly wrong with their season. A handful of other teams harbor legitimate playoff aspirations and would feel at least a little disappointed if they didn’t make it. But who else is out there? There are definitely a handful of teams that probably don’t expect to make the Playoff, but realistically have a chance if everything goes right. Here are five sleepers who could contend for a College Football Playoff spot. 5) Nebraska Year two for Scott Frost at Nebraska features increased expectations and a sleeper Heisman candidacy for quarterback Adrian Martinez. Martinez is a dual-threat quarterback with the potential to put up big numbers if the rest of the offense clicks. An experienced defense should also help the Cornhuskers improve significantly. The playoff would be a huge jump, but they play in the weaker Big Ten West. If they run the table
