Despite the fact that many believe Justin Herbert would be the top pick of the 2019 NFL Draft if he came out after his junior season, it’s being reported that the Oregon quarterback will return for his senior campaign. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports noted on Sunday that, “…numerous sources said that there is a very strong sentiment from the Oregon program that Herbert will remain in school for 2019. Several scouts from NFL teams who have held informal discussions with friends and contacts on the Oregon staff said they would be very surprised if the quarterback opted to turn pro this spring.” This report mirrors what a family friend recently said during an interview with a local newspaper in Oregon. Herbert is said to be very interested in staying in school one final year with the added bonus that he might be able to play with his brother Patrick. Aside from all that, Herbert might do well to stay in school simply so that he has more experience once he does declare for the NFL draft. His physical tools are ri

The opening month of the college football season is typically thin on upsets, but conference play regularly brings a handful of stunning results. And in Week 8, we should see 2018’s group of national championship contenders get trimmed even further. Four top-12 teams take on another ranked opponent, and two others have challenging road games against league foes. With every loss comes the risk of being eliminated from the College Football Playoff discussion. Shockers could happen elsewhere — college football is relentlessly weird, after all — but these ranked teams are on high upset alert this weekend. Ohio State Buckeyes Dwayne Haskins is excellent. Ohio State’s quarterback has thrown a Football Bowl Subdivision-best 28 touchdowns with only four interceptions. But what happens if he struggles? The Buckeyes can’t lean on the running game, since it’s mustered 3.3 yards per carry over the last four games. Although Haskins is a tough matchup for an inconsistent Purdue defense, his worst showing of the season hap

We’re roughly halfway through the college football season, and the playoff picture is becoming clearer every week. As teams continue to win or fade, we can assess what they’ve done so far. We can also look at their remaining schedule and potential championship game scenarios to figure out just how likely it will be for teams to make the College Football Playoff. There are really only a handful of about 10-12 teams that still have a shot at making it into the CFP, as the second loss of a season is usually the kiss of death for any school. It’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen on a weekly basis in college football. This last weekend, four of the top 10 teams in the AP rankings lost. Another three eked out one-possession victories. Week 8 promises to provide another unpredictable load of games that should shake up the college football landscape. Let’s look at some of the most compelling matchups and juiciest games on tap for Saturday’s action. No. 9 Oklahoma at TCU After a bye week to digest their Red River Rivalry loss to Texas, the Sooners will be chomping at the bit to bounce back against another Lone Star State adversary. A balanced offense led by quarterback Shawn Robinson that averages over 414 yards per contest and a defense that concedes an average of only 20.2 points give TCU a chance to steal this one at home to improve to 4-3. On the other hand, Oklahoma has a legitimate Heisman contender in quarterback Kyler Murray, and Robinson has thrown eight interceptions in his last five starts. The Sooners should therefore have the edge i

The City of Pullman got quite a surprise last Saturday night when ESPN’s “College GameDay” announced it was going to take up temporary residence in Week 8 for the Oregon-Washington State game. Kirk Herbstreit made the announcement, which was significant because the show has never visited Pullman before in its history. It’s a really big deal. It also presents some significant logistical issues for Pullman, which has since declared an emergency to help deal with it all. According to Evan Ellis of Pullman Radio, the Pullman City Council approved the emergency on Tuesday night. It allows Pullman Transit buses to help move fans around campus on Saturday. “WSU officials asked the city for some buses after being unable to find private bus services to accommodate the massive crowd. Longtime Gameday producer and program ‘historian’ Chris ‘The Bear’ Fallica says causing an emergency declaration is a first for the show.” It should be a blast. Well college football, you did it – now everybody is officially mad. Cue Drake’s “I’m Upset,” and put it on repeat until next weekend because the word upset is now a college football vibe — for some fans it’s a noun, but for the rest it’s a dirty little verb. I sat on my couch Saturday, pumped to be able to watch all the games and survive on something other than press box coffee and cookies. But my relaxing Saturday quickly turned into anything but — as the Georgia game started going south for the Bulldogs, I switched over to the Oregon-Washington bout, but before long that became too stressful. I fervently flipped to Michigan State-Penn State only to be met with more chaos. I had a Regina George during Spring Fling Court announcement moment as I watched the carefully constructed top 10 implode during the time it took my Postmates to arrive. A weekly journey through the vast landscape of college football, along with a few brief asides. Cliched storyline of the week Every year, a midseason, upset-laden Saturday in college football crashes ashore without warning and appears to tear the existing infrastructure asunder. Such was Week 7, 2018, in which four top-10 teams succumbed to seemingly inferior opponents, and another three top-10 teams eked out victories over seemingly less potent competition. The irony of such moments is that they often, at least temporarily, tend to allow us to assume that the chaff has been cleared away and the postseason picture now makes more sense. But does it? Here we are again, at roughly the halfway point of yet another season, and our instincts tell us to presume that the way is clear for the four remaining undefeated Power Five teams (less N.C. College football has officially gone bananas. Week 7 brought an upset-filled Saturday and dramatically changed the outlook of the 2018 season’s stretch run. One thing is clear: Under the leadership of Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama remains the class of the sport. Behind the Crimson Tide, however, it’s a mess. There are top-tier programs with glaring flaws and a bunch of teams flirting with two losses. The second half is going to be wild. That’s the way we see it, at least. From individual upsets to conference championships to award winners, we’re trying to predict the biggest stories to come as December steadily approaches. West Virginia disappears in November Heading into the season, the biggest concern for West Virginia was whether it could survive a road-heavy schedule. So far, not so good. College football reminded everyone on Saturday what makes it so much fun to watch. Within minutes of each other, three top-8 teams all went down on Saturday evening, and a fourth would follow soon after. No. 2 Georgia got throttled by No. 13 LSU — losing 36-16 in Death Valley. The Tigers rushed for 275 yards in the convincing win. Bulldogs quarterback Jake Fromm had an ugly day, going 16/34 for 209 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Shortly thereafter, No. 7 Washington lost 30-27 in overtime to No. 17 Oregon. The Huskies missed a 37-yard field goal as time expired in regulation to send the game to OT. Washington got the ball first and took the ball down to the Oregon three-yard line, but they stalled there and kicked a field goal to take a lead. Oregon got the ball in return and CJ Verdell ran for a 6-yard touchdown to win the game. Washington played much of the game without star running back Myles Gaskin, who left in the second quarter with a shoulder injury. Then minutes after Oregon’s win over Wash

Washington Huskies defensive lineman Jaylen Johnson was ejected for targeting following a big sack on Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert on Saturday. The Huskies got pressure on Herbert on a third down play midway through the fourth quarter. Herbert turned around to avoid a sack from one direction and was met by Johnson, who drilled him. The penalty gave Oregon a first down, but the Ducks ended up punting on the possession to maintain a 24-all tie. Johnson will have to sit out the first half of Washington’s next game as punishment for his targeting penalty.

Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert is widely seen as one of the best quarterbacks who could be available when the 2019 NFL Draft kicks off next April. Many believe he’s absolutely the best quarterback for that class, if he decides to come out (he’s rumored to be angling for one more year). On Saturday as his Ducks hosted the best team in the Pac-12, the Washington Huskies, Herbert demonstrated exactly why NFL scouts are drooling over his pro potential. Check out his elusiveness and ability to drop a dime under pressure. Here’s the overhead angle. Here’s another look at the same throw from a different angle that really highlights the ridiculous accuracy on this pass. Herbert has everything NFL teams look for in a franchise quarterback. At 6-foot-6 and 233 pounds, he has plenty of size. He’s extremely athletic, and (obviously) he has an NFL arm. With that in mind, don’t be surprised if Herbert ends up going No. 1 overall, either in 2019 or 2020.

The Oregon Ducks suffered a major loss Saturday when one of their leading defensive linemen was hit with an early ejection for targeting after leading with the helmet on a sack. Junior lineman Drayton Carlberg was ejected on the final play of the first quarter for this hit on Washington quarterback Jake Browning, which nullified a sack. Carlberg is a big loss, as he had 2.5 sacks in four games so far this season. It will be controversial and Oregon coach Mario Cristobal was livid, but the fact is, under today’s rules, that will be called. On the other hand, given the controversy that has hit the Pac-12 and its officiating this year, Ducks fans will probably let the conspiracy theories fly, especially with Washington being arguably the conference’s best shot at a playoff team.

This college football season can be defined by only one word so far: epic. And Week 6 kept with that theme, giving us an absolute track meet of a Red River Rivalry game with Texas outlasting Oklahoma 48-45 and ultimately determining that the Longhorns are back — like Backstreet Boys back. Week 6 also gave us the gift of SEC losses, with three teams (LSU, Kentucky and Auburn) falling on the road — although I will admit it made me sad to see the Wildcats' amazing run come to an end, with Texas A&M eliminating them from the elite group of undefeateds. But they will likely bounce back against Vanderbilt this week, so everything’s fine. So many College Football Playoff dreams were damaged. It was not just LSU, Oklahoma and Auburn, but we also saw No. 14 Stanford suffer the worst home loss in a while, falling 40-21 to a balanced and offensively adept Utah team. Oregon Ducks head basketball coach Dana Altman has denied allegations about his program paying players. During the federal trial looking into corruption in the college basketball world, Oregon was mentioned as a program that was in a bidding war for Brian Bowen, who ended up signing with Louisville. “Oregon, a Nike school, offered [Bowen] an astronomical amount of money if he’d go to Oregon,” an attorney said in the case. Oregon’s supposed involvement in the bidding for Bowen was allegedly what drove up the price on Bowen, who ended up agreeing to receive $100,000 from the Cardinals. Altman denied the allegations. “The claims that have been focused at our program are all false,” Altman said Friday, via The Oregonian. “We do not pay players. We never have. We never will.” Altman is entering his ninth season as the Ducks’ head coach. It’s widely assumed that Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert is going to leave school to declare for the 2019 NFL Draft after his junior season. Many people believe he has a great shot to be selected No. 1 overall, given his otherworldly talent and natural physical abilities. However, during an interview with the John Canzano radio show on 102.9 The Game in Portland on Thursday, former Oregon quarterback and family friend Chris Miller said he thinks Herbert will stay in school for one more year. “I’ve said this for probably the last couple years or so and I was talking to his mom, sat in front of me at the Oregon-Stanford game a couple weeks ago,” Miller said (h/t Duck Territory). If he were to come out or continue on the ascending path he is now, he’d be the first draft in the NFL draft. The first draft, pick maybe in the top five but he’s got tremendous talent, very cerebral kid, great kid. But I think he really enjoys the college experience and I think he probably is going to stay maybe another year or try

Oregon lost a key touchdown in the third quarter of their game against Stanford on Saturday night as part of a major swing. Oregon was up 24-7 and appeared to score a touchdown on a run by Jaylon Redd. However, the officials reviewed the play and determined that Redd’s left foot touched the pylon before the ball crossed the goal line. Even though the pylon is inbounds in the NFL, it is out of bounds in college football. That led to the ball being placed at the 1-yard-line for Oregon. The Ducks lost yardage on their next play on a botched exchange from the quarterback to running back. Two plays later, Justin Herbert lost a fumble after a bad snap that was picked up by Stanford and returned 80 yards for a touchdown. Instead of Oregon being up 30-7 after what they thought was a TD, the Ducks ended up only being up 24-14 after the Stanford TD. The Cardinal took that momentum and scored on their next possession, making it a 24-21 game.
