But instead of just box scores and highlights, we’re going to profile a player from each class, plus one additional story. In The Zone: We started the Box And One series highlighting Notre Dame senior star Arike Ogunbowale in the preview post. She was coming off one of the most amazing strings of consecutive big moments in basketball history, having made game-winning jump shots in both the National Semifinal against UConn as well as in the Championship Game to win the title for the Fighting Irish. She says she adapted the “Mamba Mentality,” a term representing the feeling of competitive concentration that NBA great Kobe Bryant coined to explain his desire to take clutch shots time and again. While it’s unclear how history will judge the Clemson Tigers in the context of the sport’s greatest ever teams, it’s enough to know that they went 15-0 and are going to be great again next year. Knocking them off their perch is going to be a real challenge, and only a handful of teams will be able to enter the season saying they have a chance to do it. So who are those elite few? Clemson will be the early favorite to claim the title again, but here are ten teams capable of taking it from them in 2019. 10) Oregon Mario Cristobal’s decision to stay with the Ducks, coupled with Justin Herbert’s return, ensures that Oregon will be Pac-12 contenders in 2019. Add in top recruit Kayvon Thibodeaux’s arrival to create havoc in opposing backfields, plus a Pac-12 there for the taking, and you have a potential playoff team. They’re still raw and have a ways to go, but anyone who gets in the playoff at least has a chance to knock off Clemson, and Oregon might just get there. 9) Florida That 41-15 bowl win over Michigan i

Oregon center Bol Bol may not return this season for the Ducks, according to Matt Prehm of 247Sports.com, who hears from sources that Bol is dealing with a stress fracture in his left foot. According to Prehm, a final decision has yet to be made, but multiple sources say they don’t expect Bol to get back on the court in 2018-19. “I would be completely shocked if Bol played the rest of this year,” one source told Prehm. Another source indicated that the 19-year-old, who has already sat out Oregon’s last four games, will definitely miss at least the next couple weeks and is “highly doubtful” to appear in any games beyond that. Bol, a 7-foot-2 freshman, was off to a great start this season for Oregon, averaging 21.0 PPG on .570/.520/.757 shooting through nine games. The Oregon Ducks ran one of the most inexplicable and ill-fated fake punts in recent memory in Monday’s RedBox Bowl against the Michigan State Spartans. With a 7-6 lead late in the fourth quarter and the ball at the Michigan State 28, the Ducks initially lined up for a 46-yard field goal before shifting the formation and leaving punter Blake Maimone back to receive the snap. Instead of punting, Maimone, a former high school quarterback, tried to throw it, which ended very poorly for him. It was slightly reminiscent of the fake punt the Indianapolis Colts tried to run three years ago for which they were widely eviscerated. If the Ducks wanted to go for it, they should have put the ball in quarterback Justin Herbert’s hands. Instead, the whole thing just turned into a mess.

Oregon has unveiled the uniforms it will wear in the upcoming Redbox Bowl against Michigan State next week, and as expected they are going with something we have not yet seen this season. The Ducks are sticking with their usual shiny wing helmet design, but they will be wearing contrasting-colored pants and jerseys for the first time this year. The colors will be yellow and green, and Oregon is asking fans to wear yellow. As usual, the uniforms have been well-received by college football fans and Ducks supporters. Oregon’s threads, which are manufactured by their sponsor Nike, are almost always popular. That was the case with some of the uniforms they wore throughout the year, and it is once again the theme heading into their bowl game on Dec. 31.

Justin Herbert’s decision to return to remain in school for his senior season means the 2020 quarterback class is even more loaded with talent, and some believe the Oregon star could be the best of the best. While Herbert doesn’t get nearly as much attention as Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, one NFL scout told Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports that he would put Herbert ahead of Tagovailoa at the moment. “If I was on the clock right now, I’d go with Herbert,” the scout said. “He’s taller and fits the prototype more. I really like his arm strength and ability to stay in the pocket. Tua has three or four first-round picks on offense with him, and Herbert has Dillon Mitchell. That’s pretty much it. Tua has a lot to work with. He’s got first- and second-rounders galore around him that makes his job easier.” Another concern for Tagovailoa could be durability, as he has dealt with multiple injuries in his first full season as Alabama’s starter and may have to play at less than full strength in the College Football Playoff bec

There was some Oregon Duck-on-Duck fighting on Twitter Wednesday in the wake of Justin Herbert’s announcement. Herbert announced on Wednesday that he will return to Oregon for another season rather than leave for the 2019 NFL Draft. In response to that announcement, former Oregon star quarterback Akili Smith said the Ducks were ready for a national championship run with Herbert returning. Smith then asked whether wide receiver Dillon Mitchell would return for his senior season as well. Mitchell did NOT appreciate Smith asking about his draft status. Mitchell said Smith didn’t want Herbert to throw him the ball during the season; Smith defended himself by saying he wanted the offense to spread the ball around rather than force it to one receiver. Mitchell also called Smith “slime” and implied he was fake and a snake. Mitchell enters Oregon’s bowl game with 69 catches for 1,114 yards and nine touchdowns. Smith starred at Oregon in 1998, throwing 32 touchdown passes against eight interceptions, while leading th

The 2019 NFL Draft class just got a tad weaker at the quarterback position. Considered by most to be the best pro quarterback prospect in the college ranks, Oregon’s Justin Herbert announced on Wednesday that he’s returning to Eugene for his senior season. This decision will have a significant impact at the top of next year’s draft. There’s now no clear-cut QB1 in the annual event. Herbert put up nearly 3,000 passing yards with 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions for Oregon this past regular season. The prototypical 6-foot-6 signal caller will now top the Heisman contenders list for the 2019 season. Meanwhile, quarterback-needy teams will have to look elsewhere when the 2019 NFL Draft takes place this coming spring.

NFL executives who have been keeping a close eye on Justin Herbert are going to have to wait another year for a shot at drafting him, as the Oregon quarterback announced on Wednesday that he is not leaving school early. In a statement released by the team, Herbert said he does not want questions about his future to distract the Ducks from preparing their upcoming bowl game against Michigan State. He added that he remains committed to Oregon and is looking forward to his senior season next year. Many experts predicted that Herbert would be the top QB taken in the 2019 NFL Draft, so the decision is obviously huge news. It could also be good news for Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who has not yet announced his intentions for next season but would have more competition for his services if he decides to turn pro. Herbert has thrown for nearly 3,000 yards, 28 touchdowns and eight interceptions this year. He has 62 touchdowns compared to 17 interceptions in his three seasons at Oregon. One NFL executive who

Long-rumored to be heading back to Oregon for the 2019 season, Justin Herbert confirmed (via Twitter) he will do so on Wednesday. Perhaps the top quarterback prospect who could have been part of April’s draft, Herbert will instead stay with the Ducks and then be part of the 2020 class. This further depletes the quarterback talent pool in the 2019 draft. Herbert almost certainly would have been a top-10 pick. NFL teams in need of a quarterback have scouted Herbert this season, including the Broncos and Giants. The Dolphins, too, were high on the junior Ducks passer. Instead, Herbert will be part of what is, as of now viewed as a stronger quarterback crop in 2020. Georgia’s Jake Fromm and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa are eligible to enter that draft. Herbert’s decision could have key ramifications for teams this year.
