| A Quiet Little Marriage | Wed, Sep 1 01:27 AM |
| A young couple who have different ideas about the future of their relationship find themselves drifting into a domestic civil war in this independent drama. Dax (Cy Carter) and Olive (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) have been married for a few years, and while they clearly love one another and have a satisfying sex life, their difficult relationships with their families manifest themselves in very different ways. Olive is looking after her father Bruce (Michael O'Neill) as his memories and personality fall prey to Alzheimer's syndrome, and the loss has made her eager to have a baby. Meanwhile, Dax has become the unwilling benefactor of his brother Jackson (Jimmi Simpson), a drug addict who often stops by needing cash or a place to crash, usually in the company of his sullen, silent girlfriend Sylvia (Lucy DeVito). Jackson's dependence on Dax has poisoned him on the notion of having children, and the tug of war between Olive and Dax over potential parenthood has seen them both take drastic, ridiculous action, as Olive deliberately sabotages her own diaphragm in hopes of getting pregnant while Dax counters by putting birth control pills in her breakfast. A QUIET LITTLE MARRIAGE was the first feature film from writer and director Mo Perkins. (1 hr. 25 min.) | Yahoo! Movies: New DVD Releases This Week |
| The Art of Chopin | Wed, Sep 1 01:27 AM |
| As a meditation on the life and influence of Frédéric Chopin (1810-49) that was produced to commemorate the great Polish composer's 200th birthday, this unique program falls into two distinct halves. It begins with a traditional hour-long documentary by Gérald Caillat that studies the musical scribe's life and work; then it segues into the second half - a series of contemporary and vintage performances by world-renowned artists, who interpret excerpts from some of Chopin's most beloved compositions. These luminaries include Krystian Zimerman, Artur Rubinstein, Evgeny Kissin and Martha Argerich. Classical historian Garrick Ohlsson also turns up to reflect and pontificate on Chopin's genius. As an added bonus, this release features an August 2009 concert film where Ohlsson performs Chopin's concertos, backed by The Warsaw Philharmonic and Antoni Wit. | Yahoo! | The Waiting Room | Wed, Sep 1 01:27 AM |
| Two strangers find their chance meeting in a South London train station suddenly bringing together two entirely separate groups of friends, colleagues, lovers, and acquaintances in director Roger Goldby's tale of intersecting lives. Anna (Anne-Marie Duff) and Stephen (Rolf Little) were sitting in a deserted train platform when kindly senior citizen Roger (Frank Finlay) engaged them in conversation while eagerly awaiting the arrival of his beloved wife. As they listen to Roger fondly reminiscing about all of the things that he and his wife did when they were younger, Anna and Stephen realize that they have made a real connection and, if only for a moment, allow their individual lives to slip out of focus. Having recently separated from Toby (Adrian Bower), single mother Anna is now faced with the task of bringing up her young daughter Charlie all by herself. Anna's neighbors are married young parents Jem (Zoe Telford) and George (Rupert Graves). While Jem and Anna are close friends who share all of their secrets, the one thing that Anna hasn't let out is the fact that she has entered into a troublesome affair with George. Stephen, on the other hand, has recently moved in with Fiona (Christine Bottomly), who is so eager to start a family that even her parents are pressuring she and Stephen to get pregnant. But the more intense the pressure gets, the less certain Stephen becomes that he is prepared for such a commitment. It seems like the only peace Stephen can find these days is in his work at a local old folk's home and his friendship with understanding resident Helen (Phyllida Law). Later, after Stephen and Anna go their separate ways, their lives both move into a pivotal period as they find themselves wondering just what would happen should they ever meet again. | The Occult: The Truth Behind the Word | Wed, Sep 1 01:27 AM |
| Though much of Judaeo-Christian society tends to associate the occult with something dark, sinister and evil, this program argues quite the opposite. Springboarding from the literal definition of the 'occult' as 'hidden knowledge,' the film attempts to put a positive spin on contemporary occultic behavior and activity by associating it with sources of long-sought wisdom and a deep, elusive level of alternate reality. To bring these ideas across, the documentary brings in occultic philosophers including Brian Allan, O.H. Krill and James Earnshaw - who systematically tie occultic thought to such pagan practices as ritual magick and shamanism. (75 hr.) | Yahoo! Movies: New DVD Releases This Week |

| The American / **** (R) | |
| "The American" allows George Clooney to play a man as starkly defined as a samurai. His fatal flaw, as it must be for any samurai, is love. Other than that, the American is perfect: Sealed, impervious and expert, with a focus so narrow it is defined only by his skills and his master. Here is a gripping film with the focus of a Japanese drama, an impenetrable character to equal Alain Delon's in "Le Samourai," by Jean-Pierre Melville. | RogerEbert Headlines |

| "Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1" (R, 133 minutes). Continuation of the brutal life of France's most notorious criminal, who survived a 20-year series of bank robberies, kidnappings, prison breaks and murders. Vincent Cassel makes him brutal, ugly, powerful and inscrutable. Winner of French Oscars for best director and actor. Three and a half stars | RogerEbert Headlines |

| "Mugabe and the White African" (Unrated, 90 minutes). The story of Mike Campbell, a white farmer in Zimbabwe, who resists the efforts of the Mugabe regime to take over his farm, and eventually wins his case in an African regional high court. Dramatic, emotional, but raising some questions that go unanswered. Three stars | RogerEbert Headlines |
| Flipped / ***1/2 (PG-13) | |
| "Flipped" (PG-13,90 minutes) Juli (Madeleine Carroll) has adored Bryce (Callan McAuliffe) ever since he moved into the neighborhood in the second grade. Bryce has been running away from her ever since. Now they're 14 and they seem to be flipping: he more interested, she less. Rod Reiner's warm human comedy tells their stories by showing the same crucial events from both their points of view. He returns to the time of his "Stand By Me" with the same endearing insights. Rating: Four stars | RogerEbert Headlines |
| Mesrine: Killer Instinct / ***1/2 (R) | |
| "Mesrine: Killer Instinct" (R, 113 minutes) He was a ruthless killer, bank robber, kidnapper and prison break artist--and a self-promoting egomaniac who wrote books some compared to Camus. | "Around a Small Mountain" (Unrated, 85 minutes) Jane Birkin is wonderful as a lonely woman returning to her father's little circus after 15 years. Sergio Castellitto is a man who helps her with car trouble and ends up running away with the circus along with her. But this isn't a romance; it's more two ships comforting each other in the night. Jacques Rivette, one of the founders of the French New Wave, has made a small film because for this gentle story that's exactly the right size. Three stars | RogerEbert Headlines |
| Lebanon / ***1/2 (R) | |
| "Lebanon" (92 minutes; Rated R). This claustrophobic war picture, set during Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, is like "The Hurt Locker" turned outside-in. It takes place entirely inside an Israeli tank with the four crew members: a commander, a gunner, a loader and a driver. Written and directed by Israeli filmmaker Samuel Maoz, whose experience as a veteran of that war lends authenticity to what is also a bold cinematic experiment. Winner of the Golden Lion a the 2009 Venice Film Festival. Three and a half stars. | RogerEbert Headlines |
| Chicago Heights / *** (Unrated) | |
| "Chicago Heights" (Unrated, 90 minutes). A cinematic adaptation of Sherwood Anderson's "Winesburg, Ohio," moved to the present and recent decades and set in the far south Chicago suburb of Chicago Heights. Director Daniel Nearing uses a central character muck like Anderson's, who meditates on the lives he has observed in this African-American community, and as he approaches he recalls them in love and sadness. A remarkable job of evoking the essence of a book that is often considered not filmable. Three stars | RogerEbert Headlines |
| Centurion / **1/2 (R) | |
| "Centurion" (97 minutes; Rated R). A 97-minute chase through the spectacular scenery of the Scottish Highlands -- the far reaches of the Roman Empire in 117 A.D. -- as a platoon of bedraggled Roman soldiers find themselves hunted behind enemy lines by savage Picts. It gets monotonous, but there's lots of pretty red gore to brighten things up. With Michael Fassbender and Dominic West. Directed by Neil Marshall ("Dog Soldiers," "The Descent"). Two and a half stars. | RogerEbert Headlines |
